The Sustainable Teacher
I am a primary school teacher in NSW, Australia. At this point in time, I am not overly happy about the state of the world that we will be leaving to the students in our care, and I feel that we need to make some changes for the future of humanity. Those changes need to start with us. Teachers must lead through example, living with integrity, and demonstrating the kindness and respect for each other and the planet that we want to see in our children. We have so much power, and it could be either dangerous or wasted if we don’t make the most of it now. Here I offer musings and ideas about how we can make a change for the better.
Sustainability is not just about the planet though. It’s also about building something that we can easily maintain, and sometimes this comes back to our practice. Teacher well-being is a MAJOR part of this. How are we to care for and inspire the student in our classrooms if we don’t look after ourselves first?
